AUC'KL AND COMPETITIONS. Auckland, Oct. 19. The district cricket competitions were opened to-day on wickets which were slightly damp but generally good. In three out of the four games the batting was superior to the bowling. Results North Shore 248 (Sale S 3, Prime 40, Cossey, not out 31) v. Poilsbnby. Parnell 141 (Wright 4-1) v. University 81 for 4 (Fraser 35). Eden 280 for 9 (Cummings 81, Brooke : S.mith 48, Hay, not out 41) v. Grafton. TOMOANA v. UNITED CLUB. The first match of the season was played at Tomoana on Saturday afternoon between teams from the United-and Tomoana Clubs. United battedJfirst and were disposed of for 16 runs. J. Stevens (17). Smyrk, jun. (10), and Woodcock (8 not out) being the principal scorers. Seed (7 wickets for 16 runs), Arnold (2 for 21), and Brooke (1 for 3) were the best bowlers for the home team. Tomoana were all disposed of for 34 runs, Seed (8) being the chief contributor. Smyrk captured 9 wickets for 20 runs. United went in again, and when play ceased for the day had lost three wickets lor 36 runs.
