Patr i ck Down es, who was ch a rgi ■ d nt tlie Hastings Magistrate’s Court, yesterday with procuring liquor dur ing the eurreney of his prohibit ion ardor, and remanded till this morning to permit of eiiffuiries being made as to whether avi-tisotl i-oiild be admitted to the Pakatoa inebnaivs’ Home, was brought before Mr. 8. E. McCarthy. S.M.. this morning. In answer to the Magisl.t at c, accused said he had a witness who vvciuld give evidence as to his behaviour.
Patrick Macmunara. of Mahora, sworn, said he had known Downes for about thirty years, and had seen iiim occasionally more or less drunk, but not during the past three years. He lived 20 chains from Dowries, and had never heard him creating a row to any extent.
The Magistrate said it was clear that accused was addicted (o drink, which he was able to obtain notwithstanding that he was prohibited. Instead of inflicting a tine he would order that Downes should be detained in the inebriates Home at Roto Roa. for a period of t.welvc mouths.
