MILK BOYS' WAGES
Auckland, Sept. 26
In the Police Court several milk vendors were charged with employing boys at a wage ranging from 3/a week to 2/- per day instead of the award rate of 1(5 a week. The defendants submitted that the employment of boys had been the custom of the trade before the award came into operation and contended that the award did not prohibit it expressly. The Inspector said that the boys were said by the schoolmaster to fall asleep at their work. He maintained that all persons engaged were entitled to the award wages of 46 - weekly.
Mr. Kettle, S.M., said he was disposed to agree with the Inspector and suggested that tire ease should be stated before the Arbitration Court.
Counsel asked for adjournment in order to consult his clients and this was agreed to.
