NOTES. (By “Elevation.”) The three Neiy Zealand horses that raced in Australia on Saturday last, Theodore, Wimmera and Shuja, all had the bad luck to fill second positions instead of first. The fields were large in each case, so the prospects of all of them winning races before they return to New Zealand are bright. Shuja’s performance was a good one for Kis second to Danaus in the Spring Handicap proves him to be a high-class performer. The ten furlongs took 2min. Ssec. to run. A. Goodman, the Trentham trainer has received an appointment as private trainer to Air. C. J. Parker, of Gisborne. He will have three good horses to start on in Our King, Our Queen and Multiply. Wagering on the principal handicaps of the. spring is now assuming concrete shape, especially in connection with the Australian Jockey Club’s events (says the “Sydney Morning Herald). Jacamar and Duke Feote dispute favouritism for The Metropolitan four points in advance of Lochano and Aitesian ; two points further back comes Jolly Beggar. followed at point intervals by HartfeU, Bronze, and Aurofodina, with Vice-Admiral four points further off. Lady Medallist and Royal Scotch are most talked about for the Caulfield Cup, the first-named holding pride of place by a couple of points ; while for the Melbourne Cup, Bobadea, Duke Foote, and Trafalgar dispute favouritism a couple of points in front 01 The Parisian. It was understood recently that the Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson intended to take the jumpers Hautere Armagh and Ckaihau to Australia, to take part in the A.J.C. spring campaign, but the trip has been postponed until the autumn. Eocene has been pleasing the ■’touts” at Greenmeadows lately by the way she skips over four furlongs. Her trainer is at present undecided whether he will make the trip to Otaki with the Gold Reef mare.
