Considerable damage was done on Saturday evening by one of the most serious thunderstorms experienced in Auckland for some years. The downpour was accompanied by a hailstorm which sounded on the houses like a discharge cf musketry, smashed windows and ruined gardens. Some of the stones were reported to be as large as pigecr;,’ eggs.

The Diet: and Alataura rivers arc swollen. and unless a change takes place there is risk of floods. The stranded Star of Canada at Gisborne is assuming a very disabled and desolate appearance. Yesterday the captain’s cabin, the chart-house, wheel-room and part of the flying bridge and hurricane bridge were brought ashore in toto on a lighter, and will be sold by tender.
At the Gisborne Supreme Court yesterday. Philip Francis Allpress, for attempted indecent assault, was found guilty and remanded for sentence till to-day. Robert John Eglinton was acquitted <m a charge of committing mischief by destroying four dogs valued at £25.
