FOR BRAVERY.
PORTER GORDONS REWARD. The silver medal and certificate awarded to Porter Walter Gorden by the noyal Humane Society of New Zealand, in recognition of the bravery displayed by him in saving the life of Mrs. Brown at the Hastings railway station on May 2nd last, was handed to him by His Worship the Mayer (Mr. J. Garnett) at the Hastings railway ball in the Drill Hall last' evening. In making the presentation, die Mayor said it seldom happened that the Mayor of a town had the honour of such a duty entrusted to him — that of presenting to a fellow townsman a medal and certificate for an act of heroism. Some of these nets were easily understood, charitableness and kindness one towards another was a characteristic of human nature, but when a man rescued at great personal risk from certain and terrible death, a person whom lie had never before semi or heard of. his bravery was such as was deserving of the highest merit, worthy cf remembrance for al! time, am! of the warmest commendation from his fellow men. As a fellow citizen, he was justl.v proud of Porter Gordon's action, and as he was shortly leaving the district, lie desired cn behalf of the community in genera! to wish him success. and felt sure he would be welcomed in any community. having as he did the best recommendation it was possible to possess. The medal and certificate were the second highest honours: which it was in the power of the Royal Humane Society to bestow. : which proved the worth and merit ■ of Gordon’s action. After recounting the eircunistan-: ces of the rescue, the Mayor called! for three cheers- for Gordon, and these were lustily given.
