DEMONSTRATIONS IN STRAYING AND PEENING. A very successful demonstration in pruning and spraying fruit trees was held yesterday afternoon at Mr. M. Robinson';, orchard. Mahora. in the presence of about 50 spectators. Mr. J. A. Campbell. Government Instructor, who had charge of the demonstrations. commenced proceedings with a general discussion on the various spraying compounds best adapted for the control of the different orchard pests, after which he gave a practical demonstration of preparing several different oil spia.vs, including Jlarbas, Kill All Scale, Gargoyle and Red Oil emulsified by using fish oil, carbolic and caustic potash. Mr. Campbell during the afternoon pruned a number of apple, pear and plum trees, fully explaining the proper method of training the various kinds. The spraying, which proved to be a very interesting feature of the afternoon’s work, ’was provided -by Simmonds and Co., of Napier, agents for the Bave-u Power Sprayer, who arrived for an exhibition cf the working of one of these excellent labour-saving machines. A number of large apple trees were sprayed, the work being performed in a highly satisfactory manner. A very interesting and instructive afternoon w,\s brought to a close with a hearty vote of thanks to Messrs. Campbell and Robinson, and Simmonds and Co. CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON The Fruitgrdwers’ Conference was continued this afternoon. The question cf raising of funds for the expansion of the fruit industry was discussed and the subject deferred for twelve months. It was decided that the Government be asked to erect cool stores in the main centres, the associations to pay interest and sinking fund. It was resolved to ask the Minister of Railways to reduce, the charges on fruit-case and canned fruit-case material, that a system be established of thorough booking by rail and steamer, and that provision be made for soft fruits on the express trains. Messrs. Sisson, Tonar, Stevens and Moffatt were appointed a deputation to wait on the Minister of Railways. DEPUTATION TO MINISTER FOR RAI LAV AYS. Wellington, Aug. 21. A deputation from the Fruitgrowers’ Conference waited on the Minisler cf Railways to-day, and placed before him certain mullers in relation to the fruit industry am! railways. The Minister in reply said it was his desire to meet the fruitgrowers wherever possible The trouble about the Main Trunk express was th? weight cf tlie train and the shortage of locomotives.
