MATES AND MASTERS UNION. A BRITISH STRIKE THREATENED. [ PRESS ASSOCIATION - COPYRIGHT. ] (Received 9. 10 a.m.) London. Aug. 8. The Masters and Mates Trade Union are organising a strike for higher pay. It threatens to commence in Cardiff and London. THE INTER-ISLAND STRIKE. (Received 9. 12.55 p.m.) Honolulu, Aug. 8. The strike is not settled. It is costing the Inter-Island Company 5000 dollars daily. WHARF LABOURERS FINED. Sydney. Aug. 8. In iiis reserved decision on »>;c North Coast wharf labourers cases, the Magistrate fined two £5 each and 65 others I’2 each.
DRIVERS’ DISPUTE. Dunedin. Aug. 8. Before the Conciliation Council, in the matter of the drivers’ dispute, it was announced that the parties were unable to reach an agreement on the basis of the terms proposed by the employees at wages ranging from £25 - for single horse, £2 9two Horses, to £2'lo- for two horses where no stableman is kept, the drivers being at liberty to work on wet days if desired. The dispute was referred to the Arbitration Court.
LAKE COLERIDGE TROUBLE
Christchurch, Aug. 8
The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, telegraphed in reply to the secretary of the General Labourers’ Union concerning the conditions of work at Lake Coleridge hydro-electric works as follows: — “Resident engineer has been instructed to make full inquiries on all points complained of. I have just been advised that there is no obligation on a contractor to employ a certificated engine-driver to lower men down the shaft, as a tunnel is not a mine but a quarry under the provisions of the Stone Quarries Act. The resident engineer at Christchurch will doubtless report on this point also.”

DAY LABOUR v. CONTRACTS.
Gisborne. Aug. 8.
At a meeting of the Povertj - Bay; General Labourers’ Union, the fol--lowing resolution was passed : “That this union, vigorously protests against the Government’s proposal to construct public works by the con-' tract system, and that strong representations be made with a view to maintaining the present systems of co-operative and day labour.” It was decided to forward copies of this resolution to the Minister of, Labour and the Minister of Public ] Works. i The Poverty Bay General Labour-' ers’ Union has decided to secede from the East Coast Trades and Labour Council. ;
