Ventura, the best two-year-old in Australia at the beginning of the season, and who has been wintering at Longlands, will shortly be shipped to Australia where she will go straight into training again. Cheddar, who has been in work for some time at Ngatarawa ,has joined the team at Hastings presided over by T. 1 . Quinlivan. Midnight Sun, Theodore, Royal Scotch and Kildonan leave Wellington on August 12th for Sydney. Trainer T. Quinlivan will make the journey across with them and supervise the training of the team which is to race at the spring meeting at Randwick. After racing there they will return to New Zealand in time to race at the Cup meeting at Christchurch in November. Wiinmera won his first race since going to Australia when he was first home in the Amateur Turf Hurdle Race at Melbourne on Saturday last. There were thirteen starters in the event named. As it is just twelve months since the horse was taken over it cannot be said that he has won out of his turn.. Diabolo is a consistent performer. Since he paid the big dividend on the second clay of the winter meeting in Hastings he has ran cn four occasions, three seconds and one win going down to his credit. On Saturday last at Wellington the winners of the first four races were winners on the first day of the meeting and strange to say only one of them (Kilrain) started favourite The going was very heavy and it shows that an increase in weight does not make much difference to horses that are really good mudlarks. Hawke’s Bay is likely- to be poorly represented at the Winter meeting at Riccarton—that is as far as the big races are concerned. In the Grand National Steeplechase, Hastings, horses that have been accepted for are Captain Jingle and The Spaniard, Bollin, Flingot, Elfish, Waipuktirau and Bandalcro appear among the list in the National Hur dies and Mangaoroa is the sole re presentativc in fhe Winter Cup. Bobrikoff pulled up lame a week back on the Napier Park, course after working, and it appeared at the time as if it was a serious breakdown . The trouble was not of much consequence for he put up a satisfactory gallop a day or two afterwards. Merriwa who showed fair form ever the obstacles when he was first tried has been turned out again. The Wellington meeting held at Trentham on Wednesday and Saturday last brought to a close the 1-911-12 racing season. The following penalties for Christchurch were incurred by winners at. Trentham: —Mount Victoria (Winter Cup) 51b., Captain Jingle (Grand National Steeplechase) 141 b., M hitc Cockade (National Hurdles) 14lb. The Hon. J. D. Ormond is unlikely to be represented at Riccarton next month. Five boxes were engaged some time back for his horses, but they have since been cancelled. Bollin, however, has had bis engagement continued in the Grand National Hurdles.
