Aug. 13, 15, and 17—C.J.C. Grand National Meeting. TROTTING CLUBS AND TOTE PERMITS. Palmerston North, July 22. As the Premier passed through here to-day to Woodville Mr. Buick, M.P., introduced a deputation of trotting clubs . Mr. Fred Nathan asked for a tot’alisator permit. Last year they managed to carry out successful meetings without a permit chiefly by donations, which came mainly from tho farmers. They did not wish to be dependent on donations, and as their object was to encourage the breeding of horses of a useful type he thought they should be permitted the help of \tho totalisator. There were no other trotting clubs within a wide radius and the North Island had a fewer number of trotting clubs than the South Island. He suggested that another day 7 should be allowed, if necessary taking it from a club which was better off, as was done in the case of Rangitikei. Mr .W. Mackenzie asked for a permit for the Mauawatu Hunt Club. Mr. Massey said that the 250 days allowed by statute could not be exceeded except by legislation. As s result of the Wellington conference a private bill would be introduced to increase the number of days and would be treated as a non-party question. He could not commit the Government to more than this. NEW ZEALAND GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. Christchurch, July 22.
