RACING PERMITS.

CLAIMS OF COUNTRY CLUBS. Wellington, July 20. The claims of the country racing clubs to have restored to them the totalisator permits were brought under the notice of Air. Massey and the Hon. Mr. Bell by a deputation from the country clubs this morning. Air. Bruce (Thames) said that for over two years he and his colleagues had been engaged in the battle to get back the number of days taken away from them two years ago, as the result of what they believed to be hysterical legislation. They knew the matter was difficult to handle. The intention of the country clubs conference was to promote a bill in Parliament this session to restore them to their original position, and they were determined to keep on fighting until they got their rights. The Premier said he thoroughly agreed with the opinion that hardship had been inflicted on the country clubs in quite a number of instances, and thought it right the country clubs should take steps to have their grievances remedied. No attempt would be made by the Government to regard the bill to be introduced from a part;/ point of view. Every member of the Government, and he believed every member of the House would be free to do exactly what he liked in regard tg it. He was glad the deputation had not asked the Government to introduce legislation. From a private member’s bill it would be possible to get an idea as to the attitude taken up by Parliament. The Government were in favour of promoting genuine sport and the bill would get a square deal. JOCKEY BETTER’S CONDITION. Christchurch, July 21. Better, the jockey who was injured at Riccarton seme time ago, was reported to-day to be much brighter. It appears that he has not regained complete consciousness, and is only conscious at times.
