WANGANUI ARSON CASE.
PRISON ER SENTENCED. Wellington. July 16. A ease in xvliich the question of rhe class of offence in which probation may be granted arose, came before Mr. JusHc'' Cooper in the Supreme Court to-dav. A young man, aged 19, named Joseph Stanlex, xvho had pleaded guilty at Wanganui to a charge of arson (setting fire to a hay stack), xvas placed in the dock for sentence. Mr. Justice Cooper said he had consulted other judges, v.iio ■■greed xvith Um in the opinion that he had expressed at M anganui, that it was not a case for probation. The prisoner was somewhat weak in intellect, but he knexv the difference between right and wrong. Where a prisoner had deliberately set fire to moperry bcl.mUng to another nelson. and oid so out of a motive of iweengc. it was not in the public interest that tha) person should b.’ alloxved libcrtx- without some period of disciplinary treatment.
