INQUIRY OPENED
Gisborne, July 1. The position on the Star of Canada is unchanged. The lightering of the cargo has been briskly carried out all day, and is expected to be completed to-mor-row.
The men on shore will complete! signing off to-dav. but others, under the impression 1 hat (he company must take them back to London, the Star of Canada’s port of departure, declined to sign off. Captain Taylor, of the London Salvage Association, arrives in the morning, and it is understood that the process < f abandonment will be then formally completed. A preliminary inquiry into the ’stranding of the vessel was opened in camera by the Collector of Cutoms this morning. and the evidence cf Captain Hart was taken. It is expected that the evidence of the officers w’l! be completed to-morrow, and then the evidence will be forwarded to Wellington, a magisterial inquiry being he’d later.
