Whitty Huddlestone The Australians commenced their match against Lancashire to-day.

The attendance was 4000. The w-icket was soft and difficult. Hornby won the toss and decided to field. Kelleway and Jennings opened the Australians’ innings to the bowling of Dean and Huddlestone. An unfortunate start was made, Kelleway giving a chance in the slips at two, which was accepted. Jennings and Macartney raised the score to 12. and Macartney was then bowled, playing back. He did not play with his usual certainty. Jennings batted for 65 minutes.

The bright spot in the innings was the partnership between Bardsley and Gregory, which added 79 for the fourth wicket. Bardsley was often beaten, and gave a chance at 19. Gregory batted for 100 minutes, and gave a good all round display, his hits including six fours. He gave three chances. The remainder of the team found the bowling too good for them. The 50 appeared in 55 minutes and the century was hoisted after 95 minutes. The innings lasted 170 minutes.

LANCASHIRE AT THE WICKETS Makepeace and Spooner faced the bowling of AVhitty and Kelleway. Makepeace failed to score, falling to a good catch at mid-off. Spooner gave an exihibition of driving, and was taken by a lofty match, which was well judged by leng-cn. He hatted for 60 minutes. Sharp hit a four off the last bill of the day. Ho scored 50 not out, but gave a chance at 35.
