OBITUARY.
MR. THOMAS ELLINGHAM
One of the pioneer settlers of Hawke’s Bay in the person of Mr. Thomas Ellingham, of “Whittlewood,” Ashley Clinton, passed away suddenly at his home yesterday, at the ripe old age of 88 years. Deceased took part in the Eureka stockade in the days of the Victorian gold rush, and arrived in New Zealand some fifty odd years ago. After serving in the Maori A\ ars, Mr. Ellingliain settled on a small area of land at Ashley Clinton, which was an allowance from the Provincial Government for services rendered. By his indomitable pluck and perseverance in sufmounting those obstacles winch the early settlers had to combat. Mr. Ellingham gradually increased the "acreage of his holding until he became one of the most successful farmirs in the district. Deceased was widely known for his sterling charac- ' ter and held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. He leaves four sons—Mr. Harry Ellingham, a member of the Wellington Land Board, Mr. R. Ellingham, of Pahiatua, and Messrs. J. and T. Ellingham, of Waikopiro—and four daughters, including Mrs. W. G. Callender, wife of Hr. W. G. Callender, assistant Town Clerk at Hastings.
