AN UNSINKABLE SHIP.
GERMAN PROFESSOR’S PLANS. Berlin, June SL The Norddeutscher-Lloyd is considering the adoption of Profesaor* Kretschmer’s plans for an unsinkable ship. The feature of this vessel is that it contains within a second hull a second framework, completely encased and watertight, practically nudriqg it a ship within a ship. The hull will he tetrahedral in shape to secure greater stability, and will have sharply-pointed bows, widening to a point well towards the stern, where it will have its greatest breadth. It is claimed that such a form of construction, besides reducing the water resistance, will increase the ship’s speed, and reduce the coal consumption. Designs have been j>erfected for the building of a ship, embodying these features. The vessel will be 718 ft. long, with a beam of 98ft. and a draught of 26ft.. and will be equipped with engines capable of driving her at a speed of 28 knots.
