WORKERS’ TICKETS
REFUSED FRO Al THE HASTINGS END. In reply to his letter urging that workers’ weekly tickets should be issued from Hastings and intermediate stations to Ngpicr, and that a train should be run to enable workers to reach Napier before 8 a.m., Air. H. Al. Campbell, member for Hawke's Bay. has received the following reply from the Minister of Railways:—"l have the honour to
inform you that, while recognising the reasons for such services as outlined in you letter, the information before me goes to show that there is net sufficient traffic to warrant the expenditure that would be involved in the running of an extra train, and 1 regret that after giving the matter full consideration I cannot see my way to comply with your request at the present juncture. The experiment of the issue of workers tickets from Napier to Hastings, which conics into operation on the first proximo! and which does not involve the running of any additional services, will be carefully watched, and if it is found that there is any appreciable increase in the traffic between the two towns, your representations will be further considered.”
IMPROVEMENTS AT WHAKATL REFUSED. When the Hon. H. G. Ell, Post-master-General, was in Hawke’s Bay, a deputation was introduced to him by Air. H. Al. Campbell urging that a ladies’s waiting room and conveniences should be provided at AVhnkatu, and that a goods shed should be erected there. The Minister of Railways replies as follows "I have the honour to inform you that the people using the station live in the vicinity, and there is no pressing need fo rthe provision of a ladies’ waiting room. The business transacted at the station is inconsiderable, and the goods traffic consists mainly of agricultural products which can be loaded into trucks, and as Whakatu is so close to Napier trucks can be prvided on short notice. In the circumstances, and in view of the many more urgent and important works at present in hand or awaiting funds, I regret I cannot see my way to authorise any expenditure in the direction mentioned.”
