LATE MR. JAMES G. GILBERD.

LAID TO REST.

Despite the inclemency of the weather, there was a very large and representative attendance of mourners at the funeral of Mr. James Giiberu at Napier- yesterday. The cortege was headed by the Napier City Band, who. on the way to the cemetery. played appropriate music. Following the band came members of the district fire brigad es, representatives being present from the Napier and Spit brigades and fire police, the local railway brigade and also a strong representation from the Hastings body. Members of the various societies of which the deceased gentleman was a member immediately preceded the hearse. As the procession neared the cemetery the ever impressive strains of Handel’s Dead March rose upon the air. At. the graveside the Ker. Canon Tukr conducted ti e Church of England burial service, Bros. R. Lucas and A. W. Kirk respectively performed the obsequies peculiar to the Masonic and Feresters’ societies, while Foreman F. Flynn read the ritual of the Uivtcd Fire Brigades’ Association. (r. Treston and five members of the Working Mtn’s Club acted as pall-bearers. Among those present were the Deputy-Mayor (Mr. W. P-ownian). and Cr. IV. J. McGrath. About 450 people were present in the cemetery.

Innumerable floral tributes were received, including wreaths from the Napier and Spit Fire Brigades and Fire Police. Hastings Fire Brigade, the United Fire Brigades’ Association. and the Napier Working Men’s Club. From all over the Dominion the family has received over sixty telegrams expressing sympathy, including one from Mr. J. Vigor Brown, AI.P.. at present in Wellington, in addition to numerous other expressicns of regret and sympathy.
