NAPIER PARK MEETING

. .. (By “ Elevation.”)

. The Napiqi- Park meeting; which’ concluded on Thursday, was a most successful, c-np, £22,439 being handlod at. .the machines during the tym days,-as compared .with £19,064,.at bhe winter meeting last year—an increase- of £3375. The fields were very large, and, as at Hastings, wmiftzrs were fiard to loca'tef good dividends being paid both days. Handicapper B. Coyle usually has a hippy knack of concealing winners, blit it is doubtful whether he has ever hehdicapped horses before where he has teen so successful in mystifying backers. One favourite only won during the two days, and that was Tyrannic yrhen he scored in th©<Petane Hack Steeplechase on Wednesday. -Falls were numerous in the jumping races, but happily none of them were attended with serious injury to horses or riders. , . , ■ ’

Julian was hqckgd for the, opening race, the Moteo, Hack Hurdles, as if it was a certainty, but over the last half-mile he had no chanpe with the little-fancifed Nedra. Waiao,- who carried 101 b overweight, made, a good showing up to. a ruile and a half and will be harder to. beat next time he is started. The race did him good and he just missed second place oil Thursday when carrying 91b overweight. ■ 1 Wirihana, who led over the last fence in the Petane Flack Steeplechase on Wednesday and then was beaten out of place at the finish, was lame when he returned to the paddock. Pukeroa, after running off in both steeplechases he started in on the first day at Hastings, ran Straight on this occasion, and paid a good second dividend. Tyrannic carried his 11.8 comfortably and finished full of running. He is a good chaser, but he did not stay out the 21 miles well on Thursday when carrying 41bs less. Up to 2 miles he is hard to beat just now. Six- Frieco was brought through from Levin to try and' win the Stewards’ Stakes Handicap, but he never looked like winning. Kilosteri started a rank outsider and returned his backers a substantial dividend. The Park coni si is evidently to his liking, for at the spring meeting he ran a good race to Bobrikcff. He was the outsider of the 15 runners on Wednesday.

Captain Jingle shewed a great turn of speed after he landed ever the last fence in tlie Napier Steeple, chase cn Wednesday. Denzel had a good lead at the time, but Captain Jingle collared him about 50 yards from the post and beat him pointless. Donzel made a faulty jump in the Park Steeplechase on Thursday, which put him out cf the race. Dug "Watt, his rider, looked to have a very bad fall, but beyond a shaking he was unhurt.

Consequent .on his good showing in the Bracelet at Hustings Prince Eddie went out favourite in the Ladies’ Bracelet cn Wednesday, but he- failed to gain a place. Comedian ran a good race for ever a mile, but did. not stay out the last quarter, eventually finishing third. . When Idealism had a good lead over* the last hurdle on Wednesday his backers were on good terms with themselves, but he failed badly when Elfish caught him close to the winning post. Waterworks was favourite and ran a fair third, but Merriwa was never in the hunt, and jumped badly. Waiputere looked too light in condition, and she is feeling the effects of the hard lacing she has done of late.

Prosper was favourite in both of his races, but on Wednesday he got so badly away that he was not persevered with. On Thursday he was

the to get going, but died away a furlong from home after making all the running. Diavolo showed that his win at Hastings was no fluke, for he ran a very close second to Ceylon on Wednesday and went one Petter on Thursday by carrying off the Brooklands Hack Handicap. A rise of 171 b stopped Nedra from repeating her performance of the previous daj ? in the Waichiki Hack Hurdle Race. St. Toney essayed to win all the way, but by tlie lime the straight was reached he had had enough. Nescott and Bravest, who finished first and second at Hastings a week .ago, again fought out the finish. This time the positions were reversed, Nescott outstaying che brother to Corazon.

Lord Renown started first favourite for the Winter Oats Handicap, but he did not run as well as he had" on the previous day. San Pltiie gallops well on the Park course, especially in Decly’s hands. Last winter she ran second to Projectile in the Vv inter Oats and won a race at the autumn meeting, after running second on the first day. On Thursday it was a great race between San Pluie, Mount Victoria and Brown Trout over the last 50 yards, half a length separated them at the finish.

Appin was made a strong favourite for rhe Park Steeplechase Handicap of 2 imllc's, but he could not go the pace scr by Sir Lethe. Morihiko, a hunter, put up a surprisingly good race and was able to beat everything but Sir Lcbhc. The race was robbed of a good deal of interest .by The Chief and Danzel falling. Ngakau started favourite m tlie Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap of one mile, but as in all the races, with the exception of one, the favourite was again beaten,. Alpheus, who is by Birkenhead from Arethusa, won handily at the finish. Ultimatum made the pace for over half the distance, but failed badly from that out. Srrathmoira gave, the best showing outside the placed horses. Beilin won his first hurdle race in good style on Thursday, and he should add more races to his credit this winter. lie was in front a long Way from Louie and won without the whip being drawn.’ Black Northern ran well aider l.is Lig weight.

■ A’ taru. who lird net won a race for about' 18 months, scored .ail the way In the final race of rhe meeting, the, Nbwstead Hack Handicap. Ma. keh.ua almost got to her ovei the last furlong, but A-inaru had plenty’ in reserve and drew .away again. Biend is a good sort and ran consistently at boh Hastings and Park meetings. At Hastings .he was just beaten for a-iplacg in the race won by Diavolo, .and ak-Sjapjcr -a first und a second went down to his credit. !■ Ik. Ddeley’s record for five mounts at the Park-was 2 firsts, once second, bnce third, and once unplaced.
