SCARCITY OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.
PROPOSED IMPORTATION.
Yesterday the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, in dealing with a recommendation of the Southland Education Board that in view of the | shortage of certificates;; teachers be imported from Home, ■ the chairman, Mr. Whittington, sa-’.o | that he had great sympathy with the object but in his opinion it was no, advisable to adopt the recommerc’a tion. If they experienced difficulty in getting their own teachers to gc. to the baekblocks, was it reasonable to suppose that imported teacher:.from England would do so ? It would rather be advisable to approach Government and ask that the salaries of teatihers be increased. Mr. Morgan said it was more s question of salary; and accommodation they had to deal with. The accommodation affected more especially girls and they could not expect those girls who had been brought up in a town to put up with the ac commodation at some places. Rev. Mr. Giant desired to\ emphasise the tact that they ought tc try and get in early at the Training Colleges, and thus obtain teacher; whom, otherwise, they would lose. The secretary said that copies ol advertisements and application forms were sent to the colleges ir ample time. Mr. McLeod: How can you expect teachers to work in the backblocki for £93 per annum J i A resolution was ultimately par,." ; cd to the effect that while the board | had every sympathy with the ob-i jects in view, they could not fall in with the suggestion that teachers I be imported from Home. i
