RESISTING THE POLICE.
Thomas Brow-nicy, alias Browlie, alias Fred Power, aged 36, who created some excitement in Heretaunga street, Hastings, yesterday afternoon by resisting arrest by Constable McLean, was brought before Messrs C. Hughes and M. Heslop, J.P., at the Hastings Court this morning charged (1) with drunkenness, (2) with resisting Constable McLean in the execution oi* his duty, and (3) with damaging the- con stable’s uniform.
Accused pleaded guilty, and also admitted previous convictions for assault, obscene language and resisting the police at Wellington, similar crimes at Palmerston North and Masterton, and theft at Hastings. Yesterday Brownley resisted violently, and but for the timely arr’val of Sergeant Hogan would probably have given the constable a rough handling. The Bench pointed out that there had been too much of this kind of misbehaviour in Hastings of late and future transgressors would pay a heavy penalty. Accused was convicted and dis charged on the first charge, on the second count he was fined £1", or m default three months' imprisonment, and on the charge of damaging the constable's uniform was fined £3 or one month, the sentences tn be cumulative.
