H.B. COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Hawke’s Bay County Council met this morning. Present: Crs. Chambers (chair), Gordon, Crosse, Clark, Macdonald, Shrimpton, and Donnelly.

Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Stead.

The chairman moved for the metalling of another section of the Maractotara road. —Agreed to. The chairman’s action in accepting metalling tenders was approved. The chairman recommended the planting of suitable gum trees in disused reserves and gravel pits.—Approved. The chairman recommended payment of £230 to Holt for metal carting, and this was agreed to. " Repairs to Bowron’s bridge are to be proceeded with at once. The chairman reported that he had found that Conway’s drain was the only means of dealing with the water in that locality, and to get over the difficulty with Mr. Conway it was resolved to ask the Commissioner of Crown Lands to declare the drain a public one. Kemp’s tender was accepted for the supply of metal from the Te Mata gravel pit.

A petition was received from D. B. Hill and others asking that Poraite road be metalled.—The Overseer reported that the cost would be £350. —Qn the motion of , Cr. Macdonald £loo is to be spent.

The formation of a road at Clive Grange was asked for.—Left to the chairman and Cr. Gordon.

The Hastings Borough Council asked for payment of £l4Bl/9/4, loan liability over a merged area.—Chairman to meet the Hastings Borough Council and make arrangements. The Napier South Town Board notified that it would collect its own rates in future, and also asked for power to expend county rates in that district.—The chairman suggested that part of the 5 per cent, charged for collection be remitted, and with Cr. Macdonald he was instructed to enquire into the matter. The chairmag also suggested that the request to expend county rates be agreed to up to two-thirds of the rate. There could be no objection so long as something was kept in hand. Mr. G. Kelly replied to the council regarding the Tuki Tuki bridge. The settlers desired a cheaper bridge as proposed by Mr. McMillan.—On the motion of Cr. Gordon the settlers are t*o be informed that Government has been asked to deal with the work and as the matter is now in the hands of the Public Works Department it would be advisable to communicate with the department. Mr. J. L. Mackey asked for a culvert across the Longlands-Paki PakiMaraekakaho roads, and forwarded a cheque for £lO towards cost of same. Other neighbours had not contributed.—The Overseer said the cost would . be ■ £7o.—Council will provide half the cost. Mr. W. F. Craig asked for repairs to his road.—Overseer to report.

Mr. H. R. Clark stated the terms upon which he would agree to metal being taken from his quarry. He would charge no royalty if a certain road, wds metalled with a year.—£so to be spent upon metalling *the worst parts of the road. The natives objected to any a'tri ation to the road through Pub er . whitu.—Left to the chairman and Cr Crosse.

William Rowney objected to having water turned upon his land through a new culvert. —Received. Mr. E. R. Dampney asked for repairs to the Mangatutu road.—Overseer to .be reminded of the work.

Mr. E. Ellison agreed to give two acres of land for a road at Havelock, to join Franklin’s road, for £35 per acre. — - Accepted, provided Mr. Franklin makes the connection.

Dedication of Frimley road wdl be accepted if work is performed Id accordance with conditions.

Mr. Tipping asked for the r.nnaation of a road at Paukawa.—To be attended when possible. A further section of the road was left to the chairman and Cr Crosse to attend to.

Mr. P. Parsons asked for flood gates to be erected and a drain dug near Taradale road. —Overseer to attend to the matters.

Accounts to the total of £3531/.’.', 3 were passed for payment.
