NEW ZEALAND POTATOES.
AUSTRALIAN EXPORT. [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL IJ (Own Correspondent.) Wellington, June 8. The Hon. T. Buxton stated yesterday that negotiations with the Commonwealth for admission of New Zealand potatoes were being pushed forward. The Commonwealth of Australia still insisted that New Zealand consignments, in addition to having the grader’s certificate that they were free of disease, should have a declaration from the grower, a provision that in operation was impracticable. In the meantime, however, large consignments had been sent from Oamaru and Timaru to Melbourne. If the lots proved satisfactory, as he hoped, they would be asked again to waive the demand for a grower’s declaration, and he believed that the concession would be granted. It was possible that a reasonable concession would be made, the potatoes being admitted with a certain percentage of disease, say 2 or 3 per cent.
