A CEMETERY OF FIVE ACRES.
We have received from Mr. M. Fraser, Government Statistician, M oilington, a ccpy of the Municipal Yeai Bock for 1911. We notice with regret that the Hastings Borough Council have no; considered it worth while to supply the compiler of the book with the latest information regarding the operations of the borough. Practically the same ole. “write up” which appeared in the first issue of the publication still serves lo fill the space allotted to the town in the handbook, and strangers who refer to it to ascertain what manner of place Hastings is to reside in are seriously tcid that there is a cemctcrv of five acres within the bor cugh. That’s about all, and they are thereby impressed that Hastings exists only as a place where people go when they feel like dying. Thi:. may serve as a splendid advertisement for Mr. Sam Teng’s business, but it docs not push the town along in the right direction. Surely a council which accepts tenders at a sweater’s price ter its borough advertising should show consistency b.v grabbing all the free space it can get in the Government publication. There are many pleasing truths to b( told about the town of Hastings—its splend : d climate, its rich soil, its prolific orchards, .its fine buildings, its progress, its enterprising people, its prettv racecourse and show grounds, and its health-giving Clifton, K dnappers and \\ a niarama. Nothing, however, is writ-ten of these attractions. Nothing but a five-acre cemetery.
