Hart, a’ third class steward, said he warned the steerage passengers of their danger. Stewards were placed at various points to direct the way to the boat deck. Many of the women who went were afraid to enter the boats, and returned to their quarters, thinking they would be safer aboard. All the women and children could have reached the boats if they wished. Durrant, recalled, said lie picked up no message indicating that the Titanic was being towed to Halifax.

New York, May 17
The Senate’s committee has obtained evidence tending to rebat the theory that the White Star Companysuppressed the news of the sinking. The vice-president of the New York - Newhaven - Halifax railway stated that he received instructions to provide accommodation for all the surviving Titanic’s passengers at Halifax on Monday. The order was countermanded on Monday night.
LIFEBOAT ACCOMMODATION.
Sydney, May 17
The Labour Council appointed a deputation to urge on the Government the necessity of securing foi passengers and crews of vessels the maximum of safety. The Seamen’s Union delegate stated that ship’s boats were often bad, the accommodation insufficient, and life-saving appliances were conspicuous by their absence.

Mr. Buxton has appointed a committee of experts to advise the Board of Trade concerning the construction of passenger ships, watertight doors and other safeguards.
