EAST COAST RAILWAY.
THE HARBOUR EMBANKMENT
A meeting of delegates from interested local bodies was held in the Borough Council Chambers, Napier this morning to discuss the proposed construction of the railway embankment over the inner harbour. There were present' Messrs Mason Chambers (chairmaii), Jull, Ellison, Clarke, McGrath, Niven, Lane, Kenny, Murray, and Messrs Kennedy and Nelson engineers. Mr. Nelson produced the plans which he had prepared for the delegates and he and Mr. Kennedy ga.t information to the meeting’. There was a considerable amount of informal discussion upon the mat ter, the sense of which was that the meeting approved of the suggestion to move the railway out from its present position so as to enable the widening of Hyderabad road and the ultimate reclamation of the present river bed. The present course of the river to be diverted by the second bridge on the Taradale road, while the old course be kept open until the | Napier drainage system was complet- I ed. Some difference existed between i the engineers as to the placing of! bridges to allow for the overflow, but there was no material diverg- | ence. Eventually Mr. McGrath I moved : “That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that the railways be kept out from the starting point marked ‘F’ to a point marked ‘A’ on the accompanying plan so as to avoid the present and future congestion of railway and road traffic.’’ This motion was carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. McGrath. Messrs. Chambers and Jull were appointed to interview the Ministers of Railways and Public Works and to get them to visit Napier and investigate the matter. The meeting then adjourned.
