TERRITORIALS IN CAMP.
ALLEGED DRINKING OF STRONG DRINK. ' GENERAL GODEEY’S ANTI- I LIQUOR EFFORTS. { Wellington, May 14. j Replying to the complaints madej by the Christchurch Prohibition League concerning alleged drinking at. the Territorial camps and objectionable, conduct at Templeton and Rangiork camps, Gen. Gddley, in the i course of a long letter, says it has, been his earnest desire that every j effort should be made .to prevent! liquor being introduced at the camps! and heavy penalties are provided for I this misdemeanour. A very strict en-t quiry would be held to establish the truth or otherwise of the statement, I because the good name of the rcgi-.i ment was at stake. The defence| scheme was only in its infancy and the difficulties to ensure the smooth , running of the machine at the start. are great. There may be a certain - number who for want of discipline, and self-restraint behave in the man- ’ ner described, but the officers do all in their power by example and precept to instil into the minds of the young men the physical and moral disabilities that ensure from drinking intoxicating liquors. The holding of camps near licensed premises has been avoided as much as possible. Where such things are unavoidable. in future steps ■ will be taken to prevent the men from approaching licensed premises. Efforts to improve the young men .who go into camps could be immensely assisted by sympathisers outside of the military organisation.
