Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Lowry left yesterday for Taupo.

Mr. and Mrs Douglas Williams have arrived in Napier en route for Gisborne.

Mr. Beattie and Mr. Pearson, of the railway engineer staff, are on a visit to Napier. Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Stead left yesterday for Taupo, where they intend remaining for some time. Mr. J. Fitzgerald has returned to Napier after spending a month’s holiday at Auckland and Rotorua.

A London cablegram announces the death of Mr. Archibald Coats, head of the famous thread firm.

Mr. IV. Shrimpton was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday. Mr. George Johnson, who has been on a visit to Hastings, returned to Auckland by this morning’s mail train.

A Sydney’ cablegram states that Sir Joseph and Lady Ward lunched with the Governor-General and paid a call on the Lord-Mayor. Mr. R. Smith left Hastings by this morning’s mail train for the ' King Country, where he has decided to engage in the timber industry. The Hon. Thomas Mackenzie, Prime Minister, is expected to arrive at Napier by the mail train this evening. He in-oceeds to Gisborne by the Monowai, sailing at 8.30 p.m.

The first business transacted at the meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday, was the appointment of a chairman. Mr. J. A. Millar in a few well-chosen words referred to the excellent work done by Mr. Shrimpton during the year, and proposed that he be appointed chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. G. A. McDonald seconded the motion, and also paid tribute to the excellent work done by Mr. Shrimpton. The motion was carried unanimously. After yesterday’s meeting of the County Council the chairman and members of the council presented the clerk, Mr. A. H. Ferguson, with a silver teaset and trav on the occasion of his maii iage. The chairman in a fitting speech, made the presentation, and wished the recipient and bis wife long life and happiness. Other members of the council spoke in similar terms. Mr. Ferguson returned thanks for their handsome gift and good wishes.
