HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING
The usual monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held in the Borugh Council Chambers, Napier, yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs. W. Shrimpjton (chairman), J. Garnett, J. A. Millar, F. Taylor, J. E. Large, A. G. Macdonald, T. E. Crosse, C. H. Cranby, and Hon. J. D. Ormond.
APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN.
Mr. J. A. Millar proposed that Mr. W. Shrimpton be again appointed chairman, and the motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Shrimpton suitably returned thanks. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported as follows: — Vouchers amounting to £935/8/1 were examined and payment is recommended. Mr. Lascelles applied for the admission of Mrs. Highly to the Margaret Ward.—Further enquiries to be made. H.B. Children’s Home asked that 6, - per week be paid for the maintenance of Hilda Steward, instead of 5/per week. —The committee recommend that the request be granted.
Dr. McKibbin asked that the board guarantee the fees for a course of treatment at Cambridge Sanatorium for Miss Lena White.—This committee recommend that the request'be granted, subject to the case being considered by the board’s medical officer as one which would be like ly to derive benefit from Sanatorium treatment.
J. S. Taylor forwarded offer by Thomas Howse for the purchase of the board’s section at Otane. —This committee recommend that the sale of the section be held over in the meantime.
The committee further recommend that the secretary be authorised to obtain a new desk for the board’s office; that the question of remunerating the engineer fob overtime worked at the hospital be left in the hands of the chairman ; that the question of granting further leave to Nurse Hooker be left to* the chairman to arrange; that in future no nurses be permitted to be detailed for duty outside the hospital unless the consent of the chairman is first obtained.
Ordinary account: —Hospital fees collected during April £157/5/10, donations £45/4/6, other receipts £25 8/10 ; total £6124/13/7 ; March vouchers £1397/6/11,. bank balance 30/4/12 £1833/15/-, less U/p cheques £lO6 16/10, total £4726/18/2. Building account, 30/4/12: —Overdraft Bank N.Z. £3OOO. The report was adopted.
MEDICAL OFFICER’S REPORT
In Hospital on 31st March 47M' } 42 F, total 89; admitted during month 41M, 29F, 70; discharged 30M, 32F, 62; died 6M, OF, 6; in hospital 30th April 52M, 39F, total 91. Included in the above are the following cases of infectious and contagious diseases: Phthisis, admitted 4, discharged 0, died 1, remaining 6 ; chicken pox, 1,1, 0 0; scarlet fever .4, 6,0, 6; tetanus 1,0, 0, 1. Thirty-five operations were performed during the month. Outpatients’ Department.—Number treated during the month 45, number of visits 82.
Report adopted. SANITARY INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
Seventeen cases of infectious diseases have been notified during the month. The incidence of these eases throughout the districts has been as follows :—Napier Borough : Tjqihoid 1, scarlet fever 2. Hastings Borough : Scarlet fever 2, diphtheria 1, tuberculosis 1. Hawke’s Bay 7 County : Scarlet fever 3, tuberculosis 2. Waipawa Borough: Diphtheria 1. Dannevirke Borough : Scarlet fever 1, diphtheria 1. Waipawa County : Scarlet fever 1, diphtheria 1. Patients removed to hospital suffering from infectious disease 11.

Sanitary inspections have been attended to also in both districts. Cases have come under my notice this month, which compel me to again call attention to the necessity 7 for medical practitioners to notify your board of all cases of tubercular disease. W’ithout such notification, which each practitioner must iorward according to statute, it is impossible for the board to take such action as is necessary to deal successfully with the suppression of this disease.
Report adopted. It was resolved to draw the attention of the medical men to the lapses in giving notice of infectious diseases.
GENERAL. Outdoor rations for April were 956, March 826. The secretary made a report upon the occurrence of a fire in the Margaret Ward. The construction of the stove was faulty. Colonel Sandtmann expressed thanks for the presence of the nurses at the Tutira camp. Donations to the amount of £B3/4 -1 were acknowledged, and vouchers amounting to £935.8 1 were passed for payment. It was resolved that plans and specifications for the doctor s residence be procured. On the motion of Mr. Garnett, a local architect will be employed to prepare plans for the doctor’s residence. and the Building Committee was empowered to deal with the matter.
