Christchurch, May 8

Walter Richard Sadler, who figured in what is known as the Cashel street mystery, was before the. Court this morning charged with having performed an illegal operation at Kaiapoi on Harriet May Keatley on April Bth, and a similar operation cn the same girl at Wellington cn April 26th. The case is attracting a great deal of attention locally. The girl Keatley went into the witness box and related the circumstances of the first operation, which was arranged with Sadler by John M ilson. She is 19 years old. . , Wilson gave evidence that the girl Keatley was living at Christchurch when she learnt she was pregnant. He took her to her heme at Kaiapoi and discussed marriage. They dec.ded not to marry for two or three ycar«. They then discussed the question of her undergoing an illegal operation, and he wrote to Sacdei. who was then in IV ellington. on the subject. Sadler replied by telegram “Wire £10." He had wired £2 and then £5. Sadler came down on Eister Monday and took Keatley to witness’ place. The operation was unsuccessful. and he subsequently arranged for the girl to go to W ellmg ton. Further evidence was given concerning the telegrams and moi-.y orders.
