ATHLETICS.

NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION

Wellington, Alay 6. I The council of the New Zealai’j, Athletic Association met to-night. A letter from the New Zealam Athletic and Cycling Union stater that one of their executive, who hap pened to be in Westport, wrote :■ •The action of the Westport Foot ball Club in holding sports (avowed Iv amateur), practical!}’ two meet inas. at Cape ■ Foulwind and Graniti Creek, is a erving shame. It woul< be a good idea to enquire into th< bona-fides of the alleged amatem sports meeting held at Westport or Saturday and Monday of Eastei time. I know that certain cash met competed, and surely this fact alont would show the Amateur Athleti* Association that they were just beinj used to raise money for people wh< care nothing at all about sport.” • It was stated that this came fron a reliable source, and it was decided to ask the Canterbury centre whe ther any permit was issued for the meeting, the local centre knowing nothing about it. With regard to a record claimed t< have been put up by J. AlcHolm ir throwing a 61b. hammer at Christ church on February 25th, the chair man reported that he had ascertain ed that there was only one competi tor in the event, and he ruled that it could not be held as a record. It was explained that had there beer only one other entrant the applica tion would have been m order. _ U was resolved to uphold the ruling of the chairman in the matter. An application by G. A. N. Clarke for reinstatement was referred to the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association. Two other applications for rem statement, those of A. Al. St. George and R. Sprague, were referred to the Auckland Association for information as to whether either of these athlete? had received payment for playing football under the Northern I mor rules. - -
