FOOTBALL.

HAWKE’S BAY RUGBY UNION

The annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union was held Napier last night. Mr. F. Logan

was in the chair, and the following delegates were present: —Wairoa, Messrs R. T. Bailey, Currie, AV. Logan; trustees, Messrs F. Logan, Napier, Messrs W. J. McGrath and P. McNamara; Pirates, Napier, Messrs W. Hislop and H. Absolum; Hastings, Messrs Hamilton, Nikera, and Stowe; Dannevirke, Messrs. Rosenberg, A. Williams and Mcßae ; Waipukurau, Mr. Merton; High School, Messrs Wilsorf and McCartney’ ; Star, Messrs Spackman and Brown; also Messrs. W. Corbett, Fortune, and E. P. Smyrk, vicepresidents. The annual report (already published) was adopted.

The Star and Suburban clubs were admitted as affiliated clubs. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr. F. Logan (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs G. Hunter, M.P., P .Hunter, G. I. Roach, R. D. D. McLean, J. Fortune. G. Flemming,' F. Wilson, L. F. Pegler, W. C. Gooseman, A. L. D. Fraser, E. P. Smyhk, J. Snodgrass, J. Thornton, W. McCarthy, C. D. Kennedy, A. Bowman, F. C. Williams, J. R. Ross, W. Plowman, W. J. McGrath, R. Bishop, W. Nelson, W. Corbett, Geo. Nelson, C. M. Whittington, A. S. M. Polsbn, F. D. McVay, J. J. Niven, F. Bee, Drs. Leahy, De Lisle and Wilson, and the presidents of the various subunions ; vice-president to the New Zealand Rugbj’ Union, Mr. F. Logan; trustees, Messrs. F. Logan, W. J. McGrath, and Herdman; chairman of the Management Committee, Mr; R. T. Bailey. On the motion of Mr. F. Logan it was resolved to place on record the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union’s appreciation of the valuable services of the retiring chairman, Mr. AV. J. McGrath. '

Mr. Bailey thanked the delegates for the honour which the meeting had conferred upon him, and urged the members present to assist him during the coming year. Mr. AV. Hislop was elected non. secretary and Mr C. Douglas Wilson hon. treasurer.

The following committee were elected :—Messrs. J. G. Herdman, Douglas, F. D. McVay, Spackman, and AVilliams; Messrs. Gooseinan, Pegler and Absolum were elected senior selectors; Messrs Stowe, Irvine and one from Napier, to be chosen by the Management Committee, junior selectors; and Messrs J'. Garnett, G. Laws, and W. J. McGrath delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The proposed alterations of > the rules of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby’ Union were then read and discussed for two hours, and finally adopted after amendment.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. E. Logan for his attendance at great personal inconven- . - i A hearty vote of thanks tp-the retiring Management . Committee was carried unanimously. The delegates to the N.Z. Union were instructed to vote against the Wanganui Union’s motions: (1) That Wing forwards play on right-hand of his scrum ; (2) that the penalties for a knock-on in the field of play’ be restricted to an intentional knock-on, aiid to any knock-on of more than tWo yards; (3) that if any player Outside his own 25 make a full kick iAto touch a free kick be awarded against him at a point, 10 yards at right-angles to the touch line where the ball want out; but to vote with the move" on the other motions. ' The question of insurance of players was left to the management committee, who were instructed to draw 0p some scheme at th earliest possible moment. The meeting adjourned at 12.15 a.m.i APPRECIATION OF DEFENCE ACT. . Invercargill, May 3. The commitee of the Southland Rugby Union, at its meeting tonight, passed a resolution in appreciation of the Defence Act and recognising the fair and just manner, in which the defence authorities were endeavouring to carry out their hone-too-light task. The members were of the opinion that the attendance of Rugbyites at parades on a few occasions during the season would not seriously interfere with the carrying through of the local Rugby fixtures.
