NEW STATION FOR WELLINGTON.
PLANS PREPARED.
Wellington, May 3.
A large deputation waited on the Minister for Railways to-day urging the. need for proceeding as soon as possible with the erection of a new railway station for Wellington. The Minister said that plans had been prepared for a building on the site fronting Bunny’ street, just beyond the present Lambton Station. He believed -our public buildings should be monuments to our civic patriotism, and the town planning aspect must be considered. The plans provided for five platforms to accommodate ten trains. He was not prepared to recommend Cabinet to put the matter in hand this year. There were many’ other demands, some of an urgent nature, including backblceks facilities. He proposed to sfend the chief engineer and chief traffic manager to Australia, if necessary, to get information on the subject. The new station would cost something like £356,006 or £400,606, and the building would be one of the most up-to-date in Australasia.
