MAHORA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL REPORT.
The following are the main statements contained in the report to be submitted to the annual meeting of Mahora householders this evening : “At the last annual meeting of householders in the Mahora School District the following w’ere elected to act as a committee for the ensuing year: Messrs. Robertson, Love, Stockham, Grant, Tonkin, Walker, Webb, Wyatt and Sinclair. At a subsequent meeting Mr. Robertson was elected chairman ancT Mr. Love secretary. During the year Mr. Ton-
kin resigned owing to his leaving the district, and Mr. W. Parker was elected in his place. Additions amounting to over £4OO have been made to the school, a large room having been added, thus relieving the previously over-crow’ded state of the school. An armoury and office have also been added, entirely at the committee’s expense, the board having refused to grant anything towards the cost.
The Education Board is waiting for the high pressure water supply to be laid On to the school w-hen it will proceed to call for tenders for the erection of conveniences in brick, the committee having voted £l5 towards the cost of same. The sewer can then be connected, giving the school better sanitary arrangements. The thanks of the committee are due to Messrs. Webb, and Horton for donations of shrubs, flowers, etc. These help to beautify the school and make it attractive, and both girls and boys are taking an interest in keeping their respective gardens in proper order. The proposal to erect swimming baths has not been lost sight of and the committee hope to interest some of the more fortunate settlers to the extent of contributing towards th? erection of so necessary an adjunct to a present day public schooi During the year a social and dance was held in aid of the prize fund an 1 ground improvements, and the pro fit from this, together with donations from Messrs H. M. Campbell, M.P.. and H. lan Simson, made a total .f £4O.
The work of the school has gone on splendidly. The school had the honour of topping the list for the whole of Hawke’s Bay -with Mss Phyllis Heaton, who headed the Junior National Scholarship Examination. The whole school has matte good progress and thanks are due to the staff for their untiring efforts both in and out of school. The pre sent roll number stands at 254, with an average attendance for the 1 ist quarter of 281.1. Thanks are also due to Dr. de Lisle for continue 1 donations towards the school pn;es, to Mesdames Crawford and Sal .".gny for library books and many others who have helped in any way to vir ! s the success and the smooth working of the school, not forgetting the oainstaking headmaster, Mr. < hap lin.
