Tho tramp looked shrewdly at Miss Scarhawk, and she returned his gaze with equal shrewdness, bitt her expression did not soften in the least. “You see, it’s all like this, ma’am,” said tho tramp, humbly lowering his eyes until they rested on Miss Scarhawk’s dainty shoes neatly showing below her short skirt. “Six months ago I had a little home of my own, but I made an unfortunate marriage. My wife’s temper was such that it kept mo in hot water all the time. “H’m,” said Miss Scarhawk, drily. “It’s a pity there could’nt have bee* a little soap with it. Only six months ago, did you say?’
