The remains of the late Fred erick Hicks, who was accidentally killed at Hastings on Fridav lact, were interred in the Hastings C cmetery yesterday in the presence of a large number of friends and sympathisers. In reply to a letter from the Risings Borough Council, Mr. J. Orchiston, Chief Electrical Engmcei to the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Department, has written stating that any injury to footpaths in the borough resulting from the operations of the Department would be made good. . . Two further charges arising from the recent betting raids were heard in Auckland on Saturday, when two men were charged with having, on April 9th, been found in a common gaming-house. Neither of them was a bookmaker, and did not make a living by betting. A fine of £1 (no costs) w r as inflicted in each case.
The Under-Secrctary for Internal Affairs, acting on behalf of Queen Alexandra, is collecting information in regard to the number of memorials in New Zealand to His late Majesty King Edward the Seventh, and has written to the Hastings Borough Council in regard to the matter. The Olympia rink has closed down until the Ist of May, when it will be rc-opened for the winter’s skating. At the Hastings Police Court this morning, before Mr C . Hughes, J.P., a first offending inebriate was convicted and fined £l- the amount cf his bail. Mr. Hughes replied. -‘Twentyfour hours,” and after some hesitation accused decided to toifeit his bail.

A large congregation was present at tlie annual harvest thanksgiving services held at AH Saints’ Church, Taradale yesterday. The vicar, the Re'.. A. F. Clarke conducted the morning services and preached an ’eloquent sermon on Psalm JlO, v. 11. "What reward shall I give unto th- 1 Lord for all the benefits that He hath done unto me.” Mr. McCutcheon, lay reader, conducted the evening service. The little church was very prettily deeroatccl for the festival, there being tin abundant supply of fruit, flowers and general garden produce, all of which was sent in from various parts of the parish. The arrangement of the various articles reflected great credit upon the willing band, of workois, the chancel and font calling for special mention. A demand has been made upon the County Council for payment of land tax upon the Farndon Park. The chairman has formally objected.
The chairman of the Hawke’s Bay County Council to-day suggested that certain roads in the county be closed to traction engine traffic during the winter, and members should consider the matter by next meeting.
A public meeting of citizens interested in furthering the combined lighting and tramway scheme is called for this evening at the Port Ahuriri School at 8 o’clock.
The following is the Customs revenue for the week ending last Saturday : —Customs duties £3226/1/5, beer duty £5O/8/3, other receipts £36 16/9 ; making a total of £3313/8/5.
As the Hawke’s Bay County Council clerical staff has had the extra work of collecting the Hawke’s Bay River Board rates this year they have been granted a bonus of £5 each.
Circulars have been received from the Department of Internal Affairs by the various local bodies asking them to forward particulars! of any memorials to His late Majesty King Edward VII. vvlrch have been erected in their district.
The Postmaster-General, the Hon. H. G. Ell. intends establishing two or three slot, telephone machines in the streets of Napier at places to oe fixed after due inquiry and consideration. If the experience proves a success more machines will follow.
Speaking to the Hon. H. G. Ell on Saturday evening in Napier upon the question of posting live chickens Mr. W. C. Davis su’d that he had sent out 3000 chickens last year and they travelled so safely in the cardboard boxes he had adopted that ho had only 30 deaths.
Ur. Donnelly urged at the Hawke’s Bay County Council meeting to-day that where it is possible all driving paddocks should be provided with water. Dry paddocks were cruel to the travelling stock. Efforts are to be made to do this work.

lt is stated that as the result of representations made to the Post-master-General (Hon. H. G. Ell) during his visit to Hastings on Saturday last, a slot telephone is to be installed in the private box lobby at the Hastings Post Office. A number of these machines have been installed at the chief centres in New Zealand. and have proved of great convenience to the public, who, by putting two penies in a slot, are enabled to communicate with sid-reiibt-rs on the telephone list.
