WAIPAWA. (Own Correspondent.) The council met oi Thursday. Present: Crs. L. McKay (chr.irnuui). A. E. Jull, M. Paulsen, D. Howse. iV. Little, 11. Dorreen. CORRESPONDENCE. From Telegraph Department, re elephone wires to Takapau.— De>artment had done the work without onsulting the council and the clerk .vas instructed to contradict the statement. From Sainsbury. Logan and Wiliams. asking that steps be taken to have the title to a closed road vested in Mr. J. R. B. A’Deane. — Clerk to make enquiries and give ?ffect to the request. From Danncvirke County Council isking if this council is prepared to ■ontribute towards the cost of reducing the grade of and widening the S’orsewood-South Makaretu road rom the Makaretu river to the top >f the bank at Mr. E. H. Thonip :on’s.—Council was of opinion that he Danncvirke Council should do he work, as the Waipawa Council vas maintaining their road on the ipposite side. From the Hon. Minister of Public Works, stating he is obtaining a re tort on the condition of the road 'rom Wakarara to Makaretu North Block.—Received. From Commissioner Crown Lands, suggesting spending "thirds’’ ac■rued on sections 16 and 17, block XIII., Wakarara, L.D., on the main road leading to those sections.— Agreed to. From Under-Secretary Department of Lands, that an endeavour
•vill be made to place £4OO on the csimates for the coming year towards extending the river protective works rn the Lindsay Settlement.— Cr. full stated that he and the chairman had interviewed the Undersecretary, while in Wellington, or :he matter and this was the result. —Department to be thanked. From Treasury, intimating £25 balance of Tangarewai river bridge ind approaches grant, has been paid io council’s credit.—Received. Cr. Howse’s action in letting the tender
was endorsed. From County Solicitor, with conveyance of rokd through Takapau township extension for execution. — Endorsement to be made. From G. Jamieson, asking that a culvert be placed on the Onga-Wai-pukurau road.—Left in hands of the overseer. ' From Waipukurau Town Board with reference to widening the road it the Waipukurau end of the Waipukurau traffic bridge.—Council could not make any contribution towards the work. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The following recommendations of ■.he overseer were dealt with as follows :— Clinton Riding.—Authority given to reduce corners on Ashcott-Taka-pau road. Metalling to be done < n Morton’s and Dickenson’s roads Three hundred yards of meta) authorised for Morrison’s road. Onga Riding.—River fiat to !>e formed and metalled. Waipawa Riding.—One thousand yards of metalling to be done on th-?. Argyll-Otane road. Small bridge to be erected as recommended. Ruataniwha Riding. — Overseer s recommendations to be given effect io. LOAX PROPOSALS. It was decided to take a poll on the following loan proposals:—Maungataura bridge £360. Waipawa river bridge and approaches £1945, Tukipo bridge (Sherwood) £556, Tukipo bridge (Fairfield-Takapau road) £3175 Makaretu river bridge (TakapauFairfield Voad) £2760, Waipawa river bridge (Onga-Tikokino road) £5120, Waipukurau Gorge bridges £1515, Mangamate bridge £255, Ireland’s bridge £515. Manawatu bridge £515, metalling the Brow road £1025. metalling the Argyll-Otane road £765. Cracknell’s gully bridge £515, improving the M aipawa-Lindsay road £975, deviation Stoke’s road (“Look out”) £255, South MakaretuAshley Clinton road £720 ; total £21,000. GENERAL. Ten chains to be done on the Kereru road, near Knapp’s and Hardy’s boundary.
Cr. Paulson reported that he had arranged a contract for the removal of rightsoil at Takapau.—Action endorsed. A deputation waited on the council and asked that the Kereru-Hamp-len road be metalled. —The chairman stated that tenders had been •ailed for .>9O yards of metalling. The clerk was authorised to arrange with the Waipuktirau Council for the council's share of the Waipukurau bridge timber. On receiving a deposit th? council would prepare an estimate for an extension. of the telephone service to A’akarara. Work to the extent of £lBO to be done in forming and metalling the west end of the NorsexvOod-Takapat: nain road. The question of purchasing a round site at Takapau was left in he hands of Cr. Paulsen. Authority was given to arrange ar overdraft. The overseer was given authority o clear out drains at Lindsay. The pay sheet o: £509 15 11 wa' passed for payment.
