In reply to a communication from the Hastings Town Clerk (Air. \Y . H. Cook) as to the interpretation of clause 6 of the YVellington General Labourers’ Country Award, ihe Inspector of Awards (Mr. R. T. Bailey) has given 'his opinion that overtime commences after 8i hours have been worked on five days of the week, and 5A hours on Saturday, and these canid be fixed by the employer to suit his business. The timbermen referred to apparently meant timber men for tunnel work. YVhilst admitting that a timber man need not necessarily be a carpenter, on the other hand, if such a man was called upon to do ordinary work performed by a carpenter, then of necessity he would be subject to the conditions governing that trade. However, if the timber was all prepared, and it was only a matter of placing it to keep excavations up, this, in his, opinion, could not be deemed carpenter’s work. In view of the Inspector’s opinion it has been decided to work two shifts on the erection of the sewage collecting tank at the corner of Ellison and Riverslea roads.
