THE IRON INDUSTRY.
The proposal in the Governor's Speech to nationalise the iron industry of New . Zealand has not met with the approval of the Auckland branch of the Labour party. which at its meeting last week emphasised the opinion that better use could bo found for the money which the establishment of the monopoly would cost. It was unanimously resolved “ That Messrs. Hindmarsh and Veitch be urged to obtain an investigation into the cost of living (and c return of the comparative wages and costs of living at present, 10 years and 20 years ago), and that they urge upon whatever Administration may be in office the necessity of nationalising all good monopolies with the money which it is proposed to waste on an experiment with iron.” It was also decided to strongly oppose the proposed legislation regarding the Upper House as reactionary and a " betraval of democracy, and that, pending Tne abolition of the Upper House, it should be made elective on the popular franchise.
