HAS SCOTT BEEN SUCCESSFUL?
A private wire has been received in Sydney which i eports that Captain Scott has reached the Pole. The news is as yet unconfirmed, although in al] probability such is the ease, more especially as Mr. J. J. Kinsey, representative in New’ Zealand, of Captain Scott’s Antarctic expedition, received a.cablc late last night stating that the papers reported a telegram from Captain Amundsen, who had arrived in the Fram at Hobart, was sent privately from Hobart, saying that Captain Scott had accomplished his desire. It seems quite possible the intelligence is correct as Hobart would be the'first telegraphic port from which such a message would be conveyed, and on the other hand it was suggested that. Captain Amundsen himself may have reached the Pole. On the arrival of the Frain .at. Hobart, although a fleet of launches welcomed her no permission to board was given, and as proof that an important communication was to he given Captain Amundsen proceeded direct to the Norwegian Consulate, persistentl.v refusing to give his interviewers any information whatever until he had received a reply to his cable to Norway.. However, the Terra Neva., with Captain Scott and bis men. is how due to arrive in New Zeahnrd waters - , and as the Press Association has .purchased the right to publish his report. the full account of the expedition’s work in the sout h will be given t.o the public immediately the Terr.? Nova arrives.
