YOUNG MAORI PARTY.

CONFERENCE AT NUHAKA. The Young Maori Party opened its sixteenth conference at Nubaka yesterday. Present: Mr. J. Thornton (president), the Rev. Pine Tamahori (secretary) and a largo number of local Natives. On account of the diflieultv of access and the recent rains visitors were few. Among the latter wore the Revs. A. T. Williams and Mr. Hamiora Hei. LL.B. Apologies for absence were received from Sir James Carroll, tin? Hon. A. T. Ngata and others. Rev. Mr. William's opened the proceedings with a prayer, after which the president read his address, dealing with topics affecting Maori welfare, and expressing the hope that the meeting would prove beneficial to the local Maoris. Nubaka is tlie largest Maori settlement in Hawke s Bay. Indeed, it is doubtful if a larger or more compact Maori village exists in the Dominion. It has straight streets, wellbuilt houses and good sanitary arrangements, with a population of 159. A large number of resolutions have been tabled, and interesting discussions are anticipated.
