ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
A BREAKWATER SENSATION. Before Air. S. JtlcLernon, J.P., at the Napier Magistrate’s Court at mid-day to-day. Sidney Lawton was charged with, attempting to commit suicide by throwing himself off the Breakwater. Sergt. Cummings stated that the case would have to be remanded until Monday, as a Justice of the Peace had no jurisdiction over this class of offence. The accused came front Ekctahuna about a week ago, and went down to the Breakwater this morning about a quarter to eleven and threw himself off from the main wharf opposite to l -£he beacon. He was quite a young^ man and had been about three years in the Dominion. He came from Manchester and had no relatives in this country. The cause of his rash act seemed to be despondency, but Lite Sergeant expressed the hope that in a day or two he would be all right again. The accucd was remanded until Monday. On further enquiry from M.-. J. Coe, who was on the Breakwater at the time, it apcars that the splash w ? as noticed by Mr. B. Cargill, who immediately gave the alarm. Mr. Alfred Stewart, assistant pilot, dived in, and Mr. Cargill got cut the life-saving apparatus, both being brought to shore safely. Lawton had not been long enough in the water to need restorative me. heels.
