CRICKET.
THE OVERWHELMING DEFEAT. PRESS COMMENT. (Received 11. 8.5 a.m.) Sydney. Feb. 14. The “Herald,” fomenting on the fourth test match, says that England defeated Australia not merely decisively. but overwhelmingly. There was not the smallest opening for excuse or palliation. I nder equal conditions the visiting side outplayed our representatives. All that can be said of the Australians is that their play was inexplicable and in its present form too bail to be true. We hope* that the triangular games will see Australian cricket once moreable to rnake*a reasonable fight for intern a t iomi 1 sti p rem acy. THE CONTRIBUTING CAUSE. The “Telegraph” says England’s supremacy was earned. It was a remarkable supremacy in all departments of the game. Perhaps the greatest contributing cause was the bowling by Barnes and Foster, the steady scientific patient batting which characterised the play, and right throughout the influence of good captaincy was manifest. Enthusiasm and co-operation did the rest. A PERTINENT QUESTION. (Received 14. 8.5 a.m.) London. Feb. 13. The “Evening Standard" says t would be interesting to note McAlister’s and Iredale’s reasons for dispensing with the left-handed bowler, as this certainly helped England to win. BOARD OF CONTROL. MAYNE SUCCEEDS HILL AS . SELECTOR. (Received 11. \5 a.m.) Sydney. Feb. I F Mayne (South Au-traha) io p:u*-i> ionaliy appointed to act as selector of the team to x i-it England, in place of Hill.
