LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The first session of the eighteenth Parliament of New Zealand will eominince in Wellington to-morrow at half-past two o’clock in the afternoon. Inspector Hugo will inspect the Hastings hire Brigade to-morrow evening. No leave will be granted. Special attention is called to the fat lamb and hand-fed calf classes at tiie forthcoming Autumn Show. There are six prizes for the former, running from 30 - down to s'-, and for the latter there are prizes of £:i and £l. These classes are the s.ile survivors of the fat stock section and v-iil doubtless call for the usual large entry. In fine weathr a run from Napier to Wairoa by oil launch is by no means an unpleasant experience, al.Lough many people are inclined to regard the trip as risky. Yesterday two men made the journey in a 20ft 3-li.p. Lozier launch with a passenger. It appears that a Mr. Colebrick, who is a plasterer by trade, was due in V.airo.a yesterday to sign a contract. l.>ut be missed the Tangaroa. As it was important that he should rr a eh Wairoa that day he arranged with Messrs. A. Hanlon and W. Profit to run him over in tkc-ir launch. Th? men left some time about noon, and a wire was received in Napier about 7 p.m. announcing their safe arrival. The launch is supposed tp return to-day.
Dalgety and Co. shipped about 300 u sheep by the Taviuni. which left Napier this morning for Lyttelton.
Large numbers, ot crayfish have been caught at the breakwater recently.
A large number of the houses in Hardinge road. Port Ahuriri, which are below road level, are now being raised.
A life-saving carnival is to be held in the Napier Municipal Baths on March 4th. There is a very attractive programme and some good sport can be relied on.
Saturday will be observed by one of the leading drapery houses in Napier as the half-holiday instead of Wednesday. It is understood that other firms will follow suit.
A first offending inebriate was convicted and hired £l. the amount of liis bail, at. the Hastings Police Court this morning. Mr. G. F. Roach. J.P., was on the Bench.
The hot weather that has been experienced during the past few days caused an increase in the number of bathers at the Napier Municipal Baths. The mixed bathing at nights is very well attended.
The Hobart City Council last week decided to exercise its powers under the Tramways Act, and purchase the tramways of the city, and to offer £200.000 for the whole of the company’s assets.
A special meeting of the Hastings Borough Council will be held prior to the ordinary meeting to-morrow evening to confirm the resolution adopting By-law No. 2 passed' at a special meeting on January 18th, and to fix the date upon which the said by-law shall come into force.
It is sonic years since a full list of justices <jf the peace in N.S.AY. was compiled. The "Government Gazette” which was issued last week contained the name of every one in the State. The number is upwards of 19.000. .

The fire is known to have actually started in the birds’ nest.
The business to be considered at the ordinary meeting'of the Hastings Borough Council to-morrow evening includes the apportioning of the Council’s horse-shoeing for the ensuing term of six months, taking legal proceedings to recover overdue instalments for sewer connections, and the writing off of dup.ic .te ruu*.

The Napier Technical CollegeCadet Company will hold its first drill on Friday. The company is about 1-10 strong, and as this is over the regulation number, and the roll will increase as new pupils join the school, it is possible that before long another company will have to be formed. Mr. James Connor has been appointed a lieutenant in the company.
An old cottage at the back of Kirkcaldic and Stains, Marine Parade corner was demolished yesterday. The building' was probably one of the first to be erected in Napier, and Mr. A. R. W. Lascelles for many vears usi?d it as his office. Messrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains contemplate extending their business premises by erecting a commodious building adjoining the present shop.
At the Druids’ Conference at Marton alteration of rule 88 in connection with the scale of members' contributions was carried in accordance with the executive’s proposal. The principal of consolidating the sick funds of the vaiious branches was affirmed, but will not come into operation till June Ist, 1913. Two important subjects were held over till the next biennial meeting at Marton in February next.
The ‘-Hawke’s Bay Herald” printing establishment has just completed an installation of electric light. The dri-ring power is obtained from eitfi-r of two National gas engines of the electric type, one being of 27 b.h.p. and the other 19 b.h.p. The present lighting power of the different departments demands a supply of at least 1500 candle-power per day. but this can be increased to 4500 candle-power without the addition of further plant, thus allowing a good margiii for reserve power. The installation has been placed by Messrs. Jas. J. Niven and Co.. Limited, and was carried out under the •.irpervision of Mi-. E. Coa-tes, that firm’s electrical engineer, and so far the light lias given Messrs. Dinwiddle. Walker and Co. entire satisfaction. A witness who was to have given evidence in case which cam? before Judge Docker in the Sydney Dish id Court on February 6 was tillable to attend through illness. The Hawke's Bay County rate® are being paid in rapidly just now. During the last three days mono" has been paid at the rate of £lO9O a day. To-day D the last date, upon which rates will be received without the 10 per cent, penalty and ratepayers are evidently awakening to the fact.
The wholesale prices of kerosene have been advanced to merchants by |d per gallon. This is simultaneous with the advance of }d per gallon in Australia. There, too, petroleum spirits have advanced Id per gallon wholesale. The price of motor spirits in New Zealand has also been advanced Id.
