I It is believed that the agent informed the German authorities of | Stewart’s intentions. The acquaint’unship with the agent counted heavI ily against Stewart. HOW VIEWED IN LONDON. STEWART’S SENTENCE UNJUSTIFIED. (Received 6. 8.25 a.m.) London, Feb. 5. The "Times” states that no Eng lishman can accept Stewart’s sentence as justified.
The Standard declares the verdict is another judicial outrage. No doubt the Belgian witness was the agent provocatent.
MAN OF HIGHEST INTEGRITY. (Received 6. 11 a.m.) London, Feb. 5. Mr. Arkwright, barrister, writes to the papers that Lieut. Stewart, who is convicted at Leipzig of espionage. i-, a man of the highest integrity .beloved by his contemporaries at Eton and honoured by his profr ssional colleagues. He says the British Government must demand a new trial. AN OUTRAGEOUS SENTENCE. (Received 6, 11 a.m.) London, Feb. 5. The ‘’Globe" describes the sentence as outrageous and vindictive. Newspapers are generally astonished at the weight the judges gave to the unsupported testimony of an escaped convict.
