THE HEAT WAVE.
PEOPLE PROSTRATED. Melbourne, Feb. 4. Yesterday* heavy smoke from bush fires added to the discomfort. Eighteen letter carriers were prostrated and many* railway employees arc reported to be unfit for duty owing to the heat. Hundreds are idle in various occupations for similar reasons. SULTRY WEATHER EVERYWHERE. (Received 5, 8.5 a.m.) Sydney, Feb. 5. Sultry weather everywhere prevails. It is extremely hot in the Western Districts. There are many tall registers. At Wentworth the thermometer reached 114. HILL FIRES IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, Feb. 5. Fires devastating the Hill Districts are got under control. The damage is estimated at £lOO,OOO. including much stock. BUSTI FIRES AROUND HOBART. Hobart, Feb. 5. There are destructive bush fires on the hills round tire city. Three cotages and the box factory at Gardner’s Bay were destroyed. There are similar reports in many* parts of the island. Shipping is dislocated on account of the dense smoke on the coast. The heat is intense. TRYING TIMES IN VICTORIA. SHIPPING DELAYED BY SMOKE. Melbourne, Feb. 5. One farmer lost font hundred sTieep. An apiarist named Payne has lost his home and three hundred hives of bees. Alany fire-fighters b.ave been overcome with the heat and some are badly burned. Others have been in jured by falling limbs of trees. Vessels are delayed owing to the heavy smoke oft the coast. In sonu cases ibev have been compelled tc anchor for safety. MOVING TRAIN ON FIRE. (Received 5. 9.0 a.m.) Melbourne. Feb. 5. Fire was discovered on a passenger train while in motion, the tr.*i:r was pulled up. and 35 passenger.: from two corridor cars made a hurried exit. They lost all their b< long ings. and the cars were completely destroyed. The damage is estimated at £3soi). The cause cf the fire is not known. Probably -t arose from bush fires.
