FIRES.

IN THE BUSH. CANE CROPS SUFFER. Sydney, Jan. 18. The most serious bush fires in the history of the North Coast are raging. The cane crops have suffered heavily. (Received 19, 8.5 a.m.) Jan. 19. Fires in the canefields round Murwillumbah swept over 500 acres. 3700 tons of valuable cane were destroyed. The small Kanaka growers are the chief sufferers. A number of them lost their homes.

PACKERS’ PLANT DESTROYED

New York, Jan. 18. A fire broke out in the packing plant of Schetartschild and Shlberger at Chicago. The firemen confined the outbreak to one building, which was destroyed. NUHAKA SAWMILL DESTROYED. [per press association.] Gisborne, Jan. 19. Messrs Taylor and Mclntosh’s timber mill in Mangaone Valley, Nuhaka, has been destroyed by fire. Some bush near by was being burned and the fire get out of hand and swept everything connected with the mill clean aw-ay. ANOTHER MILL BURNT. Invercargill, Jan. 19Messrs. Timpany Bros.’ mill at Seaward Bush has been destroyed by a bush fire. It was insured for £7OO on average clauses. A considerable length of tramway was destroyed.
