FIRES REPORTED. Invercargill, Jan. 17. Dry weather and hot northwester- - winds have caused bush fires in many parts of Southland and snv. - millers have had an anxious time fighting the flames. Several mills were only saved with difficulty and ■cnsiderable damage has been done o tramways and some timber has been lost. John Hart. Rttahine. lost fifteen cattle, a horse, and a shed containing implements and grass ■'-ii valued at £l5O. The atmosphere at Napier ami Hastings last night was well charged with smoke from grass fires in various narts of the district. No serious damage from the fires has been ■cncrted.
