DISASTERS AT SEA.
JANE DOUGLAS ENQUIRY. COURT’S FINDING. Nelson. Jan. 16. AV ben the enquiry into the wreck of the Jane Douglas was resumed to-day, the president of the court announced that he had received a letter from Brown, a seaman, desiring ibat certain questions be asked. Biown, in evidence, said he could net swear that the captain was under the influence of liquor on the night of the wreck. Liquor was carried on board. Ingram, mate, and Young, fireman, were called and stated that there were no signs of liquor on the caplain. No one onboard was under the influence of liquor. The court found that the night was sufficiently clear for the land to be seen, and that there was no rip or current to set the vessel out of her coarse. The spray was not sufficient t>. hide the rock, and there was not sufficient wind to put the vessel out , F her course. The steamer left port well found, and everyone on board was sober and fit for duty. On the • facts the court cohid not ascribe the wreck to inevitable accident of mere error of judgment. They consider that Captain Vcndore did not use such vigilance as was reasonably expected of him, but did not render himself so culpably negligent as to warrant the suspension of his certificate. He would be ordered to pay the cost of the enquiry, totalling £24 F3/-.
