CRICKET.
THE THIRD TEST. POOR STAND BY AUSTRALIA. A LI. OUT FOR 133. M.C.C. 49 FOR NO WICKETS. Adelaide. Jan. 12. The third test cricket match started here to-day. The English team was the same as that which played at Melbourne, while in ti e Australian fleven Matthews replaced Whittv. The teams are as follows
England.—Hobbs, Hearne, (hint). Rhodes. Mead. Foster. Douglas Woolley, Smith, Barnes. Hitch.
Australia.-- Bardsley, Kelleway. Hill. Armstrong, Trumper. Hansford. Hordern. Minneft. Cotter Cartel Matthews.
Hill won the toss and began batting on an excellent wicket. Kellewey and Bardsley opened to Foster and Bartie*. After a single each. Bardsley cut Barnes to the boundary. In Foster’s third over Kelleway was bowled -I for 6. The score was unaltered when in Barnes' next over Bardsley was snapped up at the wicket. Hordern and Ransford batted cautiously. When 6 Ransford had to retire temporarily owing to a severe blow on the left thumb from Foster. Armstrong next Lit 2 fourers off Dtrngla*. Foster bowled splendidly and none of the batsmen could hit him. After bowling 11 overs for 8 runs. Hearne gave him
a spell. At the luncheon adjournment the total was 15 for 85 minutes’ play, the bowling- being very fine. Hordern had simply blocked it with the object of wearing it down. Fester and Barnes bowled after luncheon and runs came more rapidly. Armstrong hit each bowler to the boundary and then was bowled off his pads by Foster. Armstrong flatted soundly for 59 minutes and hit 1 fourers—3 for 65. Truniper’s second shot was a fine cover hit to the boundary off Baines. Hordern drove the same bowler to the boundary and then was easily caught at short square leg. He was in 103 minutes, sedulously stonewalling —5
for 84. The next ten minutes were disastrous. Hill had two balls and the second was magnificently stumped by Smith, who brought back the ball a foot from the leg side—6 for 88. Three balls settled Minnett, who was bowled by a beauty from Foster, who then had five wickets for 23. Matthews came next. Each of the batsmen hit four. Then Matthews was eaisly caught behind the bowler—7 for 97. Fotn- byes completed the 100. which had taken 115 minutes. Cotter had a merry life, which included a sixer into the members’ pavilion, off Barnes. The same over he was bowled —8 for 113. Ransford resumed. At the tea adjournment the score stood at 125 for 9 wickets.
The innings was scon finished after tea. Douglas getting Carter in the slips in the first over after relieving Barnes. The calamatous innings occupied 197mins. There was no excuse for the Australians. Foster bowled magnificently, always accurate and often swinging the width of the wicket. Nevertheless the batting was nerveless and lacking in dash. A forcing player might have made a lot of difference. The fielding was elose and brilliant, Smith at the wickets being especially smart. His stumping of Hill was a masterpiece. The English, with an hour to bat. began with Hobbs and Rhode: against Cotter and Hordern. The} sc,on showed bow true the wicket was by forcing oT strikes against C’oteer. each bastman driving him for four. Hobbs jumped to Hordern and hit him down the ground, but. Rhodes was not so comfortable. Half ar hour's play produced 23. At 39 Hordern changed ecd.-. Kelleway relieving Cotter. .Rhodes was still troubled by the slows but worried himself oui »f trouble. II- took !sniin. to mak 10. Hobbs, when 25, skied Hordern. Out tli- ball fell saiely behind mid >ff . At 13 Matthews replaced Hord era ami appealed confidently for leg before against Hobbs, but the umpire ruled against him. Matthew: was bowling a fi-ic length and kept the batsmen quiet. Rhodes nearly returned a ball to him. The- twe men played out time when the total was 49. Both batted soundly and confidently, ami never hiked to he in serious trouble. Scares:— . AUSTRALIA.
